How is a covered outdoor learning area built at a school?

A COLA is a structural job before it is a shade job. Footings, wind loading and drainage set the design, and the build has to be staged around a playground that stays in use. Most of the programme is spent on the ground works and the tie-downs, not on the roof.

A covered outdoor learning area gets described as a shade structure, which undersells what the work actually is. The roof is the last part and the least difficult.

The structure is decided by uplift, not weight

A large roof over an open area is a light structure with a very large surface for wind to act on. The governing case is wind trying to lift it, not the roof pressing down.

That drives everything below it. Footings are sized to hold the structure in the ground rather than to stop it sinking, which is why they are deeper and larger than a client expects for something that appears to weigh very little. The tie-downs from roof to beam to column to footing are all working in tension.

On an exposed site, or one on a rise, the loads increase again.

Ground works are most of the programme

The visible build is quick. Getting to it is not.

Excavation for footings on a school site means locating existing services first, and older schools carry a lot of undocumented ones. Then there is the surface being built on, which is usually asphalt or a playing surface that has to be broken out and reinstated.

Drainage is the item most often underestimated. Putting a roof over an area concentrates a large volume of water at its edges, and that water has to go somewhere other than across the playground or into an adjacent building. Where the existing stormwater cannot take it, the upgrade becomes part of the job.

Staging around a playground in use

The area under construction is usually the area students use at recess and lunch, which means the site cannot simply be fenced for the duration and forgotten.

The sequence is planned so the fenced footprint moves as the work progresses, giving back usable space in stages. High-risk activities, excavation, craneage and steel erection, are scheduled outside movement periods.

Deliveries are the other constraint. A structural steel delivery arriving at a school gate at 3pm is a safety problem, so plant and material movements are timed against the bell rather than against the supplier's run.

Finishing so it is usable on day one

A COLA is not finished when the roof is on. The surface underneath has to be reinstated, line-marked if it doubles as a court, and drained properly at the perimeter.

Where the area serves as a sports court as well, the surface specification and the fall have to satisfy both uses, and that is resolved at design rather than after the roof is up.

What to settle before tender

Whether the area doubles as a court, because that changes the surface and the clear height. Where the water goes. What services are under the footing locations. And what the school needs available during the build.
