How are demountable classrooms installed and connected at a school?

The buildings arrive complete. The work is everything around them: a level and drained pad, footings or piers, power, data, hydraulics, accessible access and paths back into the school. Most of the programme is site preparation, and the delivery day itself is a single controlled operation.

Demountable classrooms are how NSW schools absorb enrolment growth quickly, and the buildings themselves are the simple part of the job.

Everything that decides whether the classroom is usable happens before it arrives and after it lands.

Site preparation is the real scope

The pad has to be level, stable and drained. On a school site that usually means working within an existing playground or field, breaking out surface, excavating, and building up a base that will not move.

Drainage is the item that causes problems later. A building set down without the surrounding levels being resolved creates a low point, and the low point becomes a puddle at the classroom door within one wet week.

Footings or piers are set out to the building's bearing points, which means the set-out has to be precise before anything is ordered.

Services

Power and data have to be run from the nearest suitable point, which on an older school can be a considerable distance and may require a switchboard assessment before anything is committed.

Hydraulics apply where the building includes amenities. Connecting to an existing sewer or stormwater line on a school site means locating it accurately first, and older sites frequently have services that do not match the drawings.

Fire services, alarms and evacuation provisions have to be integrated with the school's existing systems rather than treated as standalone.

Access is not optional

The classroom has to be reachable by every student and staff member, which means compliant ramps and landings, handrails, and a continuous accessible path back into the main circulation of the school.

That path is often the most substantial civil element in the whole job, particularly on a sloping site, and it is the part most likely to be underestimated at pricing.

Delivery day

The buildings arrive on trucks and are craned or moved into position. It is a single controlled operation and it has to be planned as one.

Crane position, truck access, overhead services, ground bearing capacity for the plant, and the exclusion zone around the lift all have to be resolved in advance. On a school site the operation is scheduled outside occupancy wherever possible, and where it cannot be, the separation has to be absolute.

After the set-down

Levelling and fixing down, connecting services, completing the access works, reinstating the surrounding surfaces, and cleaning the area so it hands back usable.

The classroom is judged on the day it opens. A building set down correctly with an unfinished path and a puddle at the door is not a finished job.
