What determines how long a sports court lasts?
The base and the drainage, not the surface coating. A correctly compacted base with adequate falls prevents the movement and water retention that crack surfaces. Resurfacing a court built on a poor base repeats the same failure, which is why base rectification usually decides the real cost of a renewal.
Sports courts fail from the bottom up. The visible surface takes the blame, but the cause almost always sits beneath it.
That has a direct consequence for anyone budgeting a court renewal, because resurfacing a court with a failed base buys a few seasons and then repeats the problem.
The base does the work
A court is a pavement. Its performance depends on a properly prepared, correctly compacted base with the right material and the right depth for the subgrade beneath it.
If the base moves, the surface cracks. If the subgrade holds water, the base moves. If compaction is uneven, the movement is uneven, and the cracking follows the weak line.
None of this is visible once the surface goes on, which is precisely why it gets compromised when a programme is under pressure.
Falls and drainage
The second determinant is water management. A court needs enough fall to shed water without being so steep that play is affected, and it needs somewhere for that water to go.
Standing water degrades surfaces, promotes growth that makes the court slippery, and softens the ground at the edges where the pavement is most vulnerable. Surrounding drainage matters as much as the court's own falls, because water arriving from uphill does not care about the court's design.
Surfacing and line marking
The surface system is chosen against the sports being played, the level of play and the maintenance regime available.
Line marking is the last operation and the most visible one. It is also where multi-sport courts get complicated, because several sets of markings in different colours have to coexist without confusing players. Sequencing and curing times here are unforgiving, and a rushed marking job on a surface that has not cured properly fails early.
Delivering with the ground open
Most sports facility work happens on sites that stay in use. A school ground continues through term. A council park keeps its weekends.
That makes the delivery problem a staging problem. Work areas are sealed and separated from public access, the sequence is planned around the periods when the ground is quietest, and the site is made safe at the end of each shift rather than at the end of each stage.
