How are sports field floodlights installed?

Pole foundations, an electrical supply capable of carrying the load, and a lighting design that meets the level of play while controlling spill into neighbouring properties. The civil and electrical work dominates the programme, and the approval conditions usually decide the design.

Floodlighting a field or a court is the upgrade that most changes how much a facility gets used, because it converts a daylight asset into an evening one.

It is also a job where the lighting design is set by conditions of consent as much as by the sport.

The design is a balance between two requirements

The field has to be lit to a level appropriate for the standard of play, measured across the surface rather than at its centre, with acceptable uniformity so there are no dark patches.

At the same time, light spilling into neighbouring residential properties and obtrusive light into the night sky are controlled. Those two requirements pull against each other, and the resolution is in the optics, the aiming and the pole positions rather than in simply using fewer or dimmer fittings.

Modern fittings give a lot more control over where light goes than older ones did, which is why an upgrade often improves both the playing level and the spill at the same time.

Foundations are the civil work

Lighting poles are tall, slender and exposed, and the governing load is wind. The foundation is sized to resist overturning, which on most fields means a substantial excavation and concrete pour at each pole.

Ground conditions decide how substantial. A geotechnical assessment informs the footing design, and it is worth having before the pole positions are locked, because a difficult founding condition can move a pole.

Access for the excavation and the concrete delivery across a playing surface is its own problem, and surface protection and reinstatement form part of the scope.

The electrical supply

A lighting installation is a significant load. On many older parks the existing supply cannot carry it, and the upgrade includes the switchboard, the supply, and sometimes a new connection.

That has to be established early because the lead time on a supply upgrade can exceed the construction programme.

Controls are worth attention too. Timers, zone control and remote or card-operated switching all affect how the facility is managed and how much it costs a council to run.

Approvals

Lighting on a public reserve is typically conditioned in the development consent, with limits on hours of operation, spill levels and sometimes on the specific fittings.

A compliance report against the lighting standard is usually required at completion, verifying that what was installed performs as designed.

Keeping the park open

Most of this work happens in a facility the public keeps using. The work zone is fenced around each pole location, moved as the work progresses, and the rest of the reserve stays available.
