How are stormwater and drainage upgrades delivered on a live site?
In stages, with the existing system kept functional throughout. Locating what is actually in the ground comes first, because older school and council sites rarely match their drawings. Each stage is opened, connected and reinstated within a window that leaves the site usable.
Drainage work is unglamorous and it is the reason a lot of other work has to be redone. A playground that floods, a building with water tracking under it, a court that holds a puddle for two days after rain, all trace back to the same place.
Doing it on a site that stays open adds the constraint that the existing system has to keep working while it is being replaced.
Finding what is actually there
Older school and council sites carry decades of accumulated drainage, and the records are frequently incomplete or wrong. Lines have been added, capped, diverted and forgotten.
Locating what exists is the first work package. Service location, camera survey of existing lines, and physical potholing where the answer matters. That investigation is not overhead, it is what stops an excavator finding a live line in week two.
Levels come next. Drainage works on gradient, and a design set on assumed levels rather than surveyed ones will not fall correctly.
Keeping the system live
The existing drainage cannot be taken out of service for the duration, because the first storm will demonstrate why.
So the work is staged. Sections are isolated, replaced and reconnected in sequence, with temporary provisions where a section has to be out. On a large upgrade that sequencing is most of the planning effort.
Weather is a genuine programme risk here in a way it is not on other trades. An open trench and a forecast are a decision point, and the sensible answer is often to close the stage early rather than push through.
Working around occupation
Trenches on a site that stays open are the highest-risk element of the job. They are fenced, covered or backfilled before the site hands back, every day, without exception.
That requirement shapes how much gets opened at once. It is faster to open a long run and work along it, and it is not available on a live site, so the work proceeds in lengths that can be closed within the window.
Access for plant across a playground or a park has its own consequences, including surface protection and reinstatement of anything the machines cross.
Reinstatement is part of the scope
A drainage upgrade under a playground finishes with a playground, not with a trench line. Asphalt, softfall, turf, line marking and edges all have to come back to a standard the site can use.
Where the surface above is softfall or a sports surface, the reinstatement specification is as demanding as the drainage itself, because it is the part everyone sees.
