How are trees protected during construction?
Trees identified for retention are protected under an arborist's direction, with fenced protection zones established before work starts and maintained for the duration. Inside a protection zone the method changes: no excavation by machine, no material storage, no vehicle access, and any approved work supervised by the project arborist.
On a park, a school or any established public site, the trees frequently outrank the building in the community's view of the place.
They are also protected by the consent, and damaging one is a compliance failure rather than an inconvenience.
The zone goes up before anything else
The trees to be retained are identified in the arborist's report and the consent conditions, and their protection zones are calculated rather than estimated.
Fencing goes up before any other work starts on site. Not after establishment, not once the machines arrive. Before.
Signage on the fence states what the zone is and what is prohibited inside it, because the people who need to read it include every delivery driver and every subcontractor who arrives on site for one day.
What the zone actually prohibits
No excavation by machine.
No storage of material, spoil or equipment.
No vehicle or plant access.
No washout of concrete, paint or any other material. Concrete washout inside a root zone kills trees and it is one of the more common site failures.
No changes to the ground level, because both cut and fill damage a root system.
The zone protects the roots, and the roots extend considerably further than most people assume from looking at the canopy.
When work has to happen inside the zone
Sometimes it is unavoidable. A path, a service, a footing.
Then the method changes rather than the rule. Hand excavation or hydro excavation instead of machine work. Roots exposed rather than cut, and any pruning done by the arborist rather than by whoever is holding the shovel.
Ground protection where access genuinely cannot be avoided, so the load is spread rather than compacting the soil.
And the work is supervised by the project arborist, with what was done recorded.
Design changes are cheaper than damage
The better answer is usually to move the work rather than to protect the tree from it.
A footing relocated. A service realigned. A path shifted. A retaining wall redesigned so the excavation falls outside the zone.
Raised at design stage, these are drawing changes. Raised once the wall is set out, they are variations.
Reporting and the record
The arborist inspects at the intervals the consent requires and reports.
Any incident is reported rather than covered, because a damaged root system does not show for a season and the tree that dies eighteen months later is still traced back to the works.
Photographic records of the protection measures, kept for the duration, are part of the environmental record on the project.
Why it sits with the principal contractor
Every subcontractor on the site can breach a protection zone in ten seconds, usually without knowing it exists.
Inducting them on it, maintaining the fencing and holding the standard across the whole site is the principal contractor's responsibility, and it operates under Monument's ISO 14001 certified environmental management system.
