How are electrical upgrades carried out in an occupied building?
The building keeps its power. Work is staged so that any outage is planned, short and agreed in advance, usually taken outside occupied hours or during a holiday window, with temporary supply arranged where a circuit cannot be lost. Isolation, testing and certification are documented at every stage.
An electrical upgrade in an empty building is a straightforward job. In an occupied school, depot or community facility it is a programming problem first and an electrical one second.
The building cannot lose power
That is the constraint everything else is built around.
A school running classes needs lighting, data and, in most cases, air conditioning. A council facility needs its systems live. An outage that was not agreed is a disruption the client has to explain to their own stakeholders.
So every isolation is planned: which board, which circuits, for how long, on which date, agreed with the site in advance and confirmed the day before.
Where the outages actually go
Short isolations go outside occupied hours, before or after the day, on a weekend, or in a holiday window.
Larger works, a main switchboard replacement or a mains upgrade, generally need a longer window and go into the end-of-year break or a school holiday period.
Where a circuit genuinely cannot be lost, a server room, a security system, a cold store, temporary supply is arranged and tested before the permanent supply is interrupted.
Working live-adjacent
Most of the work happens beside energised equipment rather than on it.
Which means isolation and lock-out procedures, verification of de-energisation before any work starts, and physical separation between the work area and anything still live.
Where the switchroom is in an occupied part of the building, access is controlled and the room is secured whenever it is unattended.
What the work usually involves
Main switchboard and distribution board replacement, frequently because the existing board no longer has capacity or no longer complies.
Mains upgrades where the incoming supply cannot carry the new load, which brings the network authority into the programme and its own timeframes.
Sub-mains and circuit rewiring during refurbishment.
Lighting upgrades, in classrooms and in external and sports lighting, where the levels are set by the relevant standard rather than by preference.
Power and data for new fitouts, which usually run together.
Emergency and exit lighting, which carries its own testing and certification regime.
Certification is the deliverable
Every circuit tested and results recorded. Certificates of compliant electrical work issued. Switchboard schedules updated to reflect what is actually there rather than what was there before.
That documentation goes into the handover package, because the client's electrical contractor will rely on it for the life of the asset.
Coordination with everything else
Electrical work almost never travels alone. A ceiling opened for lighting is a ceiling that also carries mechanical services and data. A wall opened for a new circuit is a wall that has to be made good and repainted.
Running those trades as a coordinated sequence rather than as separate visits is the difference between one disruption to the occupants and four.
