How are school fencing and security upgrades delivered?

The site has to remain secure every night of the programme, so the existing perimeter can never be fully removed. Work proceeds in sections with temporary fencing maintaining the boundary, and gates, access control and electrical work are coordinated so the school opens normally each morning.

A perimeter upgrade is one of the few school jobs where the constraint is absolute. The boundary cannot be open overnight, ever, at any stage of the programme.

That single requirement determines how the entire job is sequenced.

The perimeter is never fully removed

Work proceeds in sections. A length of existing fence comes out, the new footings and panels go in, and the section is closed before the site hands back. Where a section cannot be completed within the window, temporary fencing maintains the boundary until it can.

Temporary fencing on a school boundary has to be genuinely secure rather than a visual line, because it is doing the same job as the permanent fence for as long as it is there.

That approach costs programme compared to opening a long run and working along it, and there is no alternative available.

Footings and ground conditions

Fence posts need footings, and the ground along a school boundary is frequently the most disturbed on the site. Old footings, buried services, tree roots and rock all turn up.

Service location along the fence line is done before excavation, and it is worth doing properly, because boundary lines commonly carry electrical and communications services that were installed at different times by different parties.

Levels matter too. A fence follows the ground, and where the boundary falls, the panels have to step or rake. That is a design decision rather than a site one, and it should be resolved before manufacture.

Gates are the difficult part

Pedestrian gates, vehicle gates and emergency egress all have to work on day one and every day after.

Vehicle gates carry the most coordination. Automation requires power, controls and safety devices, and the swing or slide has to clear the finished levels. A gate installed before the adjacent paving is finished frequently ends up fouling on it.

Emergency egress has to be maintained throughout the works, including during the stages when a section of boundary is temporary. That is coordinated with the school rather than assumed.

Access control and electrical

Card readers, intercoms, cameras and locking hardware sit across electrical, communications and hardware scopes at once.

The integration with the school's existing system is where most of the difficulty lives. New hardware has to work with whatever is already installed, and that has to be confirmed before it is ordered rather than after.

Working while the school operates

Deliveries of fencing material and plant movement along the boundary are timed against the bell. Excavation adjacent to a play area is fenced and separated. Noisy activities are scheduled outside teaching and movement periods.

The daily test is the same as every other live-environment job. At the end of the day the boundary is secure, the area is safe, and the school opens normally in the morning.
