How are concrete works carried out while a site stays open?
A pour cannot be stopped once it starts, so it is scheduled into a window when the affected area can be closed and access can be given to a concrete truck and a pump. Curing time keeps the area out of use after the pour, which is usually the longer constraint.
Most construction activities can be paused. A concrete pour cannot.
Once the first truck discharges, the work continues until it is finished and floated, and the programme has to be built around that.
The window is set by two things
**The pour itself,** which needs uninterrupted access for trucks and, frequently, a pump. That access route has to be clear for the whole period, and on a live site it usually crosses areas people normally use.
**The cure,** which is the longer constraint and the one clients are most often surprised by. Fresh concrete cannot be walked on, driven on or loaded for a period that depends on the mix, the element and the weather.
So an area is out of use well beyond the day of the pour. A slab poured on a Friday is not necessarily trafficable on Monday.
Stating that clearly up front is more useful than optimism, because the facility has to plan around the closure rather than around the pour.
Where the windows come from
School holidays for anything substantial. A pour and its cure fit comfortably inside a break and cause nothing.
Weekends for smaller elements where the cure can run through Sunday and Monday.
Outside operating hours where the element is small and the area can be isolated overnight, though a night pour brings its own constraints around noise and lighting near occupied buildings.

Deliveries are the exposure
A concrete truck is a heavy vehicle moving on a site with pedestrians, and a pump adds a second machine with a boom.
Deliveries are scheduled outside peak pedestrian times. The route is defined and separated. A spotter controls every movement. Reversing is minimised and never done without one.
Pump set-up needs a stable position clear of underground services, and the boom has an exclusion zone underneath it for the whole time it operates.
Weather decides whether it goes ahead
Rain on fresh concrete damages the surface. Extreme heat accelerates the set and causes cracking. Cold slows the cure and extends the closure.
So the call is made the day before and again on the morning, and the criteria are set in advance rather than argued about under pressure with trucks booked.
A pour deferred for weather is a cost. A pour that goes ahead in the wrong conditions is a replacement.
Testing and certification
Slump tested on delivery, and test cylinders taken for compressive strength.
Those results are what confirm the element achieved its design strength, and they go into the project record. On structural elements they are the evidence a certifier and an engineer rely on.
Reinforcement is inspected before the pour, because it cannot be inspected afterwards. That inspection is scheduled, not assumed, and it is held under Monument's ISO 9001 certified quality system.
Protecting it afterwards
The cured area is protected until it is genuinely ready.
That means barriers that stay up, signage that explains why, and on a school site a physical separation rather than a request. Fresh concrete with footprints in it is a redo.
Curing itself is active work: keeping the surface damp or covered so it gains strength properly rather than drying too fast. Skipped curing is the most common cause of surface cracking, and it happens after everyone thinks the job is finished.
