How are plumbing and hydraulic services upgraded in a school?

The building keeps its water and its amenities. Work is staged so isolations are short and planned, temporary facilities are provided where amenities go offline, and anything substantial is programmed into a holiday window. Hot water and backflow prevention carry their own compliance requirements.

A school without water does not operate. That is the constraint, and it is more absolute than most services constraints because there is no alternative arrangement for a few hundred people.

Isolations are short, planned and notified

Every water shutdown is agreed in advance: which section, for how long, on which day.

Short isolations go outside school hours or into a recess period where the affected area is limited. Anything longer goes into a holiday window.

Where a section genuinely cannot lose supply, a temporary connection is run and tested before the permanent one is interrupted.

The same discipline applies as with [electrical isolations](/answers/electrical-upgrades-in-occupied-buildings): nothing is turned off on the assumption it will be quick.

Amenities are the sensitive part

Taking a toilet block offline is not a services issue, it is an operational one. A school has a required provision and losing a block affects the whole site.

So amenity upgrades are staged block by block, or temporary facilities are brought in, and the accessible facilities are covered specifically. Losing the accessible toilet without an alternative excludes the students who have the fewest options.

What the work usually involves

**Pipework replacement.** Old galvanised supply lines corrode internally, restrict flow and discolour the water. Replacement is frequently the underlying reason for the project.

**Drainage.** Below-ground sewer and waste, which means excavation, which means [service location](/answers/service-location-and-utility-relocations) before anything is dug.

**Hot water plant.** Storage or instantaneous, with delivery temperature controls. Tempering valves are a compliance item at fixtures accessible to students, and they are tested and certified.

**Backflow prevention.** Testable devices with an annual inspection regime, required at the connection and at specific fixtures. Where a school has never had them tested, that is a compliance gap the project usually uncovers.

**Tapware and fixtures.** Vandal resistant and water efficient, because a school fixture is operated an enormous number of times and is not treated gently.

**Rainwater and reuse** where the school has tanks, including the switching arrangement between tank and mains.

Legionella and stagnation

A building that sits empty over a long holiday has water standing in its pipes.

Where a system has been isolated or partially drained during works, it is flushed and, where required, disinfected before it is returned to service. On a large hot water system this is a documented process rather than running the taps.

This matters most after exactly the holiday programmes that suit the construction, which is why it is planned into the return-to-service rather than remembered at the end.

Testing and certification

Pressure testing before anything is concealed.

Certificates of compliance for the plumbing work, tempering valve commissioning records, and backflow device test certificates.

Coordination with the rest of the works

Hydraulic work rarely travels alone. A wall opened for pipework is a wall that needs making good and painting. A ceiling opened for services is a ceiling that carries electrical and mechanical too.
