How is joinery delivered in a school environment?
Joinery for schools is specified for institutional use rather than domestic, manufactured off site, and installed during holidays or out of hours. Fixing to the existing structure is verified before manufacture, because a cabinet made to a drawing rarely fits a wall built fifty years earlier.
Joinery in a school takes more abuse in a term than domestic joinery takes in a decade.
Which changes the specification, the fixing and the way the work is programmed.
Specification for institutional use
**Board and edging.** Heavier substrate, and edging applied so it survives being knocked rather than peeled. The edge is where school joinery fails first.
**Hardware rated for the cycles.** A cupboard door in a classroom opens many times a day, every day. Domestic hinges and runners do not last, and replacing them is a recurring cost the school carries.
**Locks that suit the school's key system,** not a set of unrelated cam locks with keys nobody can find.
**Finishes that clean.** Surfaces that survive marker, cleaning products and repeated wiping.
**No sharp edges, no pinch points, nothing that can be climbed.** These are specified because children will test all of them.
Measuring before manufacturing
The most common failure on a school joinery job is a unit manufactured to a drawing and delivered to a wall that is not where the drawing says.
Older buildings are out of square, out of plumb and out of level, sometimes considerably. A run of units made to fit a nominal opening arrives and does not.
So the sequence is: survey the actual opening, then manufacture, then install with scribes and fillers designed in rather than improvised on the day.
That survey is also when the fixing is resolved. A heavy wall unit needs something structural behind it, and the wall it is going on may be masonry, stud, or hollow terracotta block that will not hold a load. Establishing that before the unit is made is the difference between an install and a problem.
Programming around the school
Joinery installation is noisy, generates dust and blocks the space.
Which means holidays for anything substantial, and out of hours for anything smaller. A classroom cannot lose a week of use in term time, and a partially installed unit is not a usable classroom.
Off-site manufacture is what makes that possible. The units arrive finished, the install is a fixing exercise rather than a construction one, and the space is handed back at the end of the window. Accessibility
Where joinery serves students or staff who use a wheelchair, the heights, the knee clearance and the reach ranges are requirements rather than preferences.
That affects bench heights, the position of sinks and taps, and how far into a cupboard somebody has to reach. It is worth resolving at design rather than discovering at handover.
Coordination with services
A bench with a sink needs plumbing. A bench with equipment needs power and data. A unit over a heater needs clearance.
All of that is set out before manufacture, because a hole cut on site through a finished panel is visible for the life of the unit.
