Capability-specific questions
How are shade structures installed over playgrounds and sports areas?
Shade structures are engineered elements requiring footings designed for wind uplift, a certified fabric or roof system, and a design that clears the use below. On school and council sites they are installed in a break or under staged closure, with the play area fenced off until the footings have cured and the structure is signed off.
A shade sail looks like a soft item and behaves like a structure. The load case that governs it is wind uplift, and the footings are usually the largest part of the job.
Which is why installing one over a playground is a staged construction activity rather than an afternoon of work.
What the structure has to resist
Uplift, not weight. A tensioned fabric in a strong wind pulls hard and at an angle, and the force at the top of a post becomes a large moment at its base.
So the footings are designed for the specific geometry: the post height, the sail area, the tension, and the wind region. A footing sized from a standard detail rather than from the engineering is the most common failure, and it fails by rotating rather than by breaking.
On a site with existing services or a shallow slab, the footing design has to work around them, which is where [service location and utility relocations](/answers/service-location-and-utility-relocations) comes in before anything is excavated.
Fabric or roof
**Tensioned fabric sails** are the common choice for play areas. Lighter structure, lower cost, and a service life on the fabric that is shorter than the structure. The fabric is replaceable, which makes the structure a long-term asset and the fabric a maintenance item.
**Rigid roofed structures,** with a steel frame and metal sheeting, last longer, handle rain as well as sun, and cost more. They also require stormwater, because a roof concentrates water and it has to go somewhere, which connects to [stormwater and drainage on live sites](/answers/stormwater-and-drainage-on-live-sites).
Where the structure is also a learning or assembly space, the requirements change and the brief moves closer to [covered outdoor learning areas](/answers/covered-outdoor-learning-areas).
Clearances that decide the design
**Height above the use below,** so a ball game, a climbing frame or a basketball hoop is not obstructed.
**Clearance to the play equipment fall zone,** because a post inside a fall zone is an impact hazard and the softfall requirements extend around it.
**Clearance to buildings, fences and trees,** including allowance for the sail to move under load.
**The sun angle,** which is what the structure exists for. A sail that shades the ground at midday and nothing at three in the afternoon has been positioned without checking the angles for the hours the space is used.
Delivering it on a live site
The area is fenced for the duration, not for the installation day.
Excavation, concrete pour, cure, then erection and tensioning. The concrete has to reach strength before the posts are loaded, which puts a wait in the middle of the programme that cannot be compressed. Which is why the area is out of use for longer than the visible work suggests, and why the sequence is planned against a break where possible, as in [how do contractors deliver works during school holidays for a day 1 term start](/answers/how-do-contractors-deliver-works-during-school-holidays-for-a-day-1-te).
Where it has to happen in term, the fencing, the exclusion zone and the delivery access are managed under the controls in [construction in live environments](/answers/construction-in-live-environments) and [traffic management and deliveries to a live site](/answers/traffic-management-and-deliveries-to-a-live-site).
What is handed over
An engineering certificate for the footings and the structure, the fabric specification and warranty, the tensioning details, and the maintenance requirements including the inspection interval and the instruction on whether the sail is removed in extreme weather.
That documentation is what lets the asset owner maintain it, and it goes into the package described in [handover documentation and operation manuals](/answers/handover-documentation-and-operation-manuals).
